Remember when Netflix Canada used to be terrible and you had to watch the same few mediocre movies and shows over and over again? Thank God it’s 2016 and we now have truly great content available on multiple platforms so we can easily ignore our responsibilities on a daily basis! As Netflix’s inventory has been steadily improving, most of my time these days is spent marathoning countless hours of television, but recently I’ve realized there’s actually a bunch of really great classic movies added to Netflix that I haven’t seen in a really long time. And by “classic”, I mean movies from the 90’s/early 2000’s that you’d watch with your friends at sleepovers and now remind you of childhood/young adolescence and make you want to cry. So, here’s a blast from the past with 5 old movies you should rewatch on Netflix!
1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
I remember first watching this movie on Family Channel when I was really young and immediately being obsessed with it. Ferris Bueller lives out every kids dream, and is a hero we’ve all tried to emulate at one point or another. It’s now a staple of 80’s John Hughes teen flicks, and the perfect movie for making you feel all sorts of nostalgia.
2. 13 Going On 30
I can’t even explain how many times I watched this movie at sleepovers. It’s shocking. I remember feeling like it was such an accurate depiction of what it’s like to be young and awkward and wanting to escape that age. It’s also hilarious and romantic, and brings me right back to my childhood.
3. The Truman Show
I love how strange and original this movie is, and I’ll always remember it as my favourite version of Jim Carrey. I first saw it in grade 9, and it gave me so many feelings that I can’t wait to relive all over again! I’m sure watching a film about society’s obsession with celebrities and reality TV in 2016 will be extremely fitting.
4. High Fidelity
I only saw this movie for the first time a few months ago, but I loved how reminiscent it was of the early 2000’s and music at that time. Sadly we’ll never get to live in that amazing era again, but we can still feel connected to it through really great stories like this one. John Cusack and Jack Black are also at the top of their game in this one with one of a kind performances.
Clueless captures every great thing about the 90’s and delivers it through the truly iconic character of Cher. This is one of those movies that you can always rewatch because it provides you with such a fun and enjoyable experience. It has amazing characters, a lot of heart, and actually succeeds in making me appreciate my high school years. I’m so glad I can revisit this movie every once in a while and fall even more in love with it each time.
I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us all this quality content and also for being my life partner and never letting me down. They always know exactly what I need and never fail to surprise me. I love you until the end of time, Netflix.
