Shay’s Declassified Rye Survival Guide: Pt. 3 – Early Morning Classes

If you’re a first year student heading to Ryerson, odds are that you’ll be introduced to at least one 8 a.m. lecture. Don’t be afraid. This is a natural part of your Ryerson experience. In fact, if you learn how to survive them, you’ll find them quite beneficial.

Here’s my 5 tips to make the best of your 8 a.m. classes.

1. COFFEE. COFFEE. AND MORE COFFEEcoffee
Unless you’re a “morning person” (which let’s be real, do morning people even exist?), chances are you’ll need a little caffeinated boost to get you started. Luckily, Ryerson is literally surrounded by various Coffee vendors. Most buildings even have Timmie’s kiosks so you can stay fuelled. Ask your Campus Tour guide what their favourite coffee shop is!

2. Exercise (which really means wake up earlier)
exercise

If coffee isn’t really your thing, you can give your body a more natural boost of energy by getting active when you start your day. You can get in the habit of visiting one of the two Ryerson gyms in the morning, or even just going for a 20 minute walk/run around your neighbourhood. The adrenaline you get will last you through those groggy first few hours of the day.. and also is key to that active lifestyle we all talk about!

3. Eat a nutritious breakfast
breakfast

You’ve heard it before… breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Eating a big breakfast will raise your blood sugar and wake up your body. A great breakfast is key to a great day ahead!

4. Sleep for 7-8 hours
sleep

This may seem obvious.. but getting a good sleep will definitely help make your next morning that much better. This means you should crawl into bed by 11pm those nights before that 7 a.m. wake up! I love my bed so I usually have no issue with this.

5. Create a morning routine
routine

All right. You’ve read the other 4 points. This next step will allow you to be the 8 a.m. class superstar. Take each of these points, add your own ideas, and create some kind of schedule. Do this by writing it out, creating a calendar, or even by adding them to your own Google Calendar. Do what works best for you, and keep doing it. Having a solid early morning routine will lead to a very productive day ahead. After all, the best part about 8 a.m. classes is the amount of free time you have for the rest of the day!
