Mercedes is BACK!
Yes, it is I, your loyal student ambassador, here for another year of shenanigans! Only this time, I’m going full vlogger mode.
Now, I’m super excited to start over the admissions cycle with all of your fresh faces (and some long-time troopers!) so to kick it off, I’ll be doing things a liiiittle differently. No longer shall my blogs grace the earth (except this one… actually, don’t hold me to that 100%!).
Over the summer, while I was working full time as the live-in digital marketing assistant, I realized that my true passion lies in video work.
I’m so excited to have been given this opportunity, and I can’t wait to start showing all of you what it’s like to be a Ryerson student through my lens (ha, LENS)!
Since this is technically an intro blog, I’m going to share with you guys some stuff that I’ve been working on this past summer, and maybe a few sneak peeks for what is to come this Fall.
First, a little about me…
Name: Mercedes Irene Gaztambide-Spillane (say it ten times fast)
Program: Journalism (second-year)
Hometown: Born in Boston, grew up in Toronto
What I’m binging on Netflix: currently, Lucifer. IT’S SO GOOD.
Favourite things on earth: coffee, trying new food, my dogs (and the rest of my family) and news
Article of clothing I can’t live without: call me basic, but I can’t go a day without a pair of white kicks (Air Forces, Filas, Converse, you name it, I’ve got it)
Book that makes me cry: See You at Harry’s by Jo Knowles. I sob every time.
This summer, I started my first ‘series’ for the WhyRyerson YouTube channel! It’s called #TOurist, and it’s all about exploring Toronto and becoming a tourist in my own city. As a student, it isn’t always easy to take the time to explore the sights around me, so I wanted to take the time to showcase and promote all of the wonderful experiences available to us as Torontonians.
The first episode focused on MackHouse Inc., a sneaker customization studio at Stackt Market.
The second episode featured Storm Crow Manor, “Canada’s nerdiest bar” in mansion form, located on Church Street in the village.
All in the Ramily
‘All in the Ramily’ is a vlog that featured my mom, aka my biggest role model and best friend. In the video, we talked about my transition from high school to university, and how it impacted our relationship. It’s a tear-jerker! I really hope I can do more of these sit-down style chats in the future, because I want to be real with you all about what university life is like (and all the facets that it impacts).
Outfit of the Season (#OOTS)
You’ve heard of #OOTD (outfit of the day), now check out #OOTS! This video was made specifically for students moving to Toronto who need some advice on what to wear during each season, to stay warm (or cool) and fashionable AF. But even if you aren’t packing your suitcases, it’s a pretty informative video about what to expect going to school in the downtown climate!
Over the next couple of months, you can expect to see videos about the Toronto International Film Festival, a third episode of #TOurist (where we go water-bound!), food vlogs, interviews with students and so much more.
What do I need from you?
All of the content that I come up with is for you, the future students of Ryerson! I want to know what YOU want.
Send us a message on our Instagram, @WhyRyerson, and share your vlog ideas with me!
I can’t wait to share my life at Ryerson with you again this year.
