For those of you I have not met yet: my name is Emma Young-Buchalter and I am super excited to continue sharing my journey with WhyRyerson during the 2018-2019 school year.
A Little About Me:
I’m a third year Business Management student at the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM). I’m majoring in Marketing and minoring in both Global Management and Sociology. Ryerson gives a lot of freedom in the courses you take, which has allowed me to explore three different areas of academic interest.
I live near campus, which allows me to manage a lot of different things including two jobs, student groups, and a full courseload. When I need a break from my responsibilities, I enjoy photography and attending concerts. Just the other week, I impulsively bought tickets with my friend to see Hozier in concert. Listening to Take Me To Church live was definitely a life changing experience.
How Have I been Keeping Busy this September?
I started off the school year by volunteering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Juggling work, school, volunteering and finding time to see movies was a little rough, but the overall experience was worth it! I managed to see six films for free. The majority of the films I saw and the volunteer shifts I worked were at the Ryerson Theatre, which allowed me to save a lot of time running around. I also volunteered and saw films at the Elgin Theatre, which is a five minute walk from campus. I managed to meet Amandla Stenberg after the Where Hands Touch premiere, and some of the cast as well as the Director of Assassination Nation.
September is super busy for student groups, and as the 2018-2019 Vice President of Marketing for Enactus Ryerson, I have spent a lot of time promoting our group to first-year students. Enactus Ryerson is all about using business to create positive social change in the world, which I believe is very important; this is why I am very happy to help market the organization’s initiatives. We held our Kick-Off Party event just the other week, which we were happy to sell out, and we saw a lot of eager first-year students come out to learn about how they can get involved.
I am also part of the Top 200 Program in the Ted Rogers School of Management. This program provides specialized experimental workshops and events that help enhance personal and professional success. I had the pleasure of attending the Top 200 Leadership Summit the other week, where I got to to learn from many experienced professionals and try out a case competition. I’m super excited to continue my learning with this program throughout this school year.
I’ll be sharing more about my Ryerson and Toronto experience the whole school year, so make sure to stay tuned to the WhyRyerson blog and Snapchat!
