At the Ryerson Student Union Annual Parade and Picnic Event some healthy competition between fellow programs is most definitely welcomed. For the second year in a row Graphic Communications Management students brought home a first place for “spirit” dressed in red and armed with a massive ensemble of energetic students “a la” comic book character theme. They most definitely were “the bomb” (this is funny because their orientation tshirts displayed little comicbook-esque bombs on them). For Ryerson students, parade and picnic is one of our favourite ways to “officially” kick off the school year.
This year though, things were just a touch different at the Parade and Picnic. Instead of our route heading down to the Toronto Islands the parade headed North to the new home of our varsity teams – the Peter Gilgan Athletic Center or the former Maple Leaf Gardens. What an awesome venue! Here we saw a few top-notch artists at their best. Other times at past Parade and Picnic events Ryerson has hosted a variety of artists such as K’naan, Cardinal Offishal, Masterkraft and Kid Sister to name a few, but this year the school received an amazing beefed up performance from Fifi Dobson, Sean Kingston and Marianas Trench.
Besides Parade and Picnic there are many other new and exciting things on campus. We have a brand new and might I add, amazing, coffee spot at Balzacs Coffee Roasters on the first floor of the Image Arts Building. Here you can grab the tastiest and most delicate pastries along with a great cup of coffee or tea on the run. We also have the arrival and display of the Black Star Photography Collection (also located in the Image Arts Building) along with the Mattamy Athletic Center in the former Maple Leaf Gardens, to name a few.
Life at Ryerson is exciting, fast-paced and fun – get ready for it!
