How To Motivate Yourself For Second Semester

Just as you thought you were getting into the swing of things the fall semester came to a close and there you are on a month long winter break. If you’re like me, it can be especially hard to break out of relaxation mode and get back into study time. Use these tips to help you get motivated and do your best for the winter semester.

FIVE MINUTE RULE

The five minute rule is something I learned from a motivation speaker that actually stuck for once. When you’re given a task, judge how long it’ll take you to finish. If you can finish it in five minutes or less, do it right away. Chances are if you don’t do it then you might never get to it. Think of this as a jumpstart to other tasks you’ll tackle later in the day.

SUPPLIES STOCK UP

Part of being organized for the semester is having the tools to do so. Head over to Indigo, Dollerama, or whatever strikes your fancy and stock up on school supplies. Nothing gets me more motivated than planning out my month in a fancy new calendar. Now is the time to get all the supplies you’ll need for school so you’ll have no excuses at the end of the semester.

TO-DO LISTS

Get yourself organized with some to-do lists. Whether it’s textbooks you need to get or projects you need to finish if you can implement this into a weekly routine, you’ll always be organized and never miss a deadline. For me, to-do lists are especially helpful because nothing feels better than striking off a task.

TREAT YOUR SELF

Add some money to your OneCard or allocate an hour (or three) for some Netflix and popcorn for the week. If you have something to look forward to, like a coffee after class or another episode of Black Mirror, you’re more motivated to complete your weekly goals. The first month back can be especially hard and frustrating, don’t forget to make some time for yourself.

SET GOALS

These could be long-term or short-term. Making a set of goals whether they’re personal or academic gives you something to work for during the semester, outside of just project deadlines. Focus on what you want to achieve this semester and motivate yourself to let nothing stop you.
