Greatest Moments From First Year

Wow. It’s hard to believe how quickly my first year of university flew by! It’s been an eventful 8 months to say the least. I’m starting to get sad just thinking about leaving Ryerson and all the friends I’ve made in rez and in classes. After having this whole new experience, I can definitely say that university is so much better than I ever could’ve expected. So, as this monumental year of my life comes to an end, I thought I’d reflect on some of the best times I’ve had here at Ryerson so far, the factors that have made my overall experience one to remember…

The people

First, when I look back at how scared I was to enter into this new world, the thing that set me the most at ease right away was meeting great people. I’ve made so many new friendships this year that will last a lifetime, no doubt. From frosh week to hockey games to residence events, there were tons of awesome times which helped me to feel like I was really part of the Ryerson community. I have to give a big shoutout to all the amazing people I’ve met that have opened my eyes to so many new opportunities and experiences. This also includes this Student Ambassador job and the whole team from Admissions, which definitely made my year as great as it could be!

The classes

When I was starting out in September, I instantly knew my year would be amazing after finding out exactly what my classes would entail. The nerves associated with the higher level of learning in university were completely gone once I started learning tons of different and interesting subjects from equally interesting professors. Some highlights were my two English classes, business, philosophy, and video production.

The stars

Okay, so I’ve written about this before, but I can’t help but mention it again because I’m still not over it. It’s just. so. cool. I got to see/meet some of my favourite actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Aaron Paul, Tom Hiddleston, Jason Sudeikis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick J Adams, and more that I can’t even remember. My suggestion: if you get excited like me, definitely attend the premieres at TIFF. You’ll never know who you’ll meet and sometimes there’s chances to win free tickets to the premieres!

The food

My meal plan this year has been glorious, and I can’t even put into words how much I’m going to miss it next year when I’m slaving away in the kitchen just trying to make a decent meal that’s not Kraft Dinner. But the real treasure I indulged in way too much was Five Guys Burgers and Fries at Yonge and Dundas, and the hot dog cart on campus (you don’t even want to know how much is too much). Some of my best memories were the midnight trips to Five Guys with my floor mates. Seriously, this is one of the first places you absolutely must visit, and it’s right around the corner! Also, I can’t forget all the free food I scored on campus this year. I’ll never forget the time they were randomly giving out free cotton candy at the Rogers Communication Centre. That was a good day.

While I’m excited for the coming summer, I just know I’ll be coming back up to visit my favourite city during the four month break due to Toronto withdrawal. Until then, I hope you’re all getting excited for your first year, and you’re ready and open to having some great experiences. Above all, try to enjoy every second of it because it goes by way too fast, trust me!
