My second year at Ryerson started off with a bang. Two days before school started, I attended the final day of the 2014 Fan Expo at the Metro Toronto Convention Center, one of the best events in Toronto and a day that will stand out in my mind for years to come. Gaming, comics, sci-fi, anime, horror, and the most wonderfully nerdy people you could ever imagine…. the Fan Expo hall is definitely something to see!
What is it exactly? Basically, a 4-day Comic Con-like event that brings together the biggest fans and celebrities to celebrate various movies, TV shows, video games, and comics. Each section has huge displays with tons of paraphernalia to fangirl/fanboy over. There’s even signings, meet and greets, photo ops, and Q and A’s with the stars! (Which I’m still emotionally recovering from).
Even though I specifically went to meet two of my favorite actors (Ian Somerhalder and Nathan Fillion), I ended up loving every part of this crazy fan gathering and all of the different forms of entertainment being celebrated together.
And the absolute BEST part of Fan Expo? The costumes! Everywhere you looked, there were people dressed in the wildest getup (the best one being the guy in stilts dressed as Chewbacca). All of the cosplayers were incredibly friendly as well, instantly posing for photos when you’d approach them.
After a full day of meeting my favourite celebrities, spending way too much money on tshirts, and witnessing so much passion in one room, I’m already looking forward to Fan Expo 2015! At the very least, heading down to the convention centre at some point during the weekend just to see everyone lined up in their costumes is a worthwhile event itself. Cheers!
